Social Ministries

Casa De Clara

Casa de Clara is a house of hospitality in the Catholic Worker tradition, for homeless women, and women with children.  It has provided emergency shelter to homeless women and children for over 30 years.  It provides a warm, safe, homelike shelter for six to eight individuals. While residents are looking for more permanent housing, a job, or other community resources, they are welcome to a place to stay, meals, and other help the community can provide. Guests are welcome to stay on a two week basis. Extensions are granted on an as-need basis.

St. Julie's has a long history (25+years) supporting this ministry as volunteer cooks.  There are five teams of cooks that contribute a casserole, salad, dessert or money for a meal each month. Please consider helping just once a month. If you would like to join the cook's team or make a donation, please contact Carol Courtney (408-227-7512) or call the Parish office.

For other volunteer opportunities, contact Casa de Clara at 408-297-8330 or sanjosecatholicworker@yahoo.com.

Food Pantry

Through the Food Pantry ministry, the parishioners of St. Julie Billiart community embrace all people as children of God and reach out to care for those in need. In the past year, the food pantry has provided food to 1,200 to 1,400 people each month. We need your continued support in both food and monetary donations to make sure we can continue this vital service to the community.

For more information about or to volunteer at the Emergency Food Pantry, please call 408-629-3030 x 114.

LifeMoves

In the early 2000's, a group of fabulous volunteers began serving breakfast at LifeMoves Montgomery Street Inn, a homeless shelter for men in San Jose. They now serve breakfast every Saturday of the year. Over time, what was once approximately 600 breakfasts, turned into 9 to 10,000 breakfasts served a year.  Volunteers rotate, serving one Saturday morning a month.

In addition to serving meals, each year volunteers at LifeMoves have donated time and money to make 200 holiday care packages, which include toiletries, underwear, socks, sweatshirts, and rain ponchos.

Knights of Columbus

The Knights of Columbus is the world's largest Catholic fraternal service organization.  St. Julie's is represented by the John N. Neumann Council 6965.  For more information, please contact Tom Connolly at (408) 629-9411.

Knights of Columbus John N. Neumann Council 6965 Information

The John N. Neumann Council was originally started at Santa Teresa Church in San Jose in 1977, prior to the existence of St. Julie Billiart Parish. Upon the creation of the St. Julie Billiart Parish, Fr. Matt Sullivan (St. Julie’s first pastor) requested a Knights of Columbus council be created at St. Julie’s. Since a large segment of the existing council members were now St. Julie parishioners, the council relocated to St. Julie’s as their home parish.

Since then, the council has established three additional rountables for three neighboring parishes, those being Santa Teresa, Holy Spirit and St. Anthony’s parishes. This council is responsible for servicing the needs of all four previously mentioned parishes and their pastors. We are involved in building maintenance, faith based and fund raising projects for each of these parishes as well as many community service projects.  Some of the work includes the funding of the new kitchen in the St. Julie Sullivan Center, fund raising for Special Olympics and people with intellectual disabilities, the purchase of special equipment as needed by the parish(es) and fund raising for various parish ministries such as the youth group, the "A Night To Remember" Auction Gala, St. Julie's Food Pantry, and the diocese Seminarian Fund.  We also clean trash from Highway 85 on a monthly basis.

A number of Knights are also involved in the running of the St. Julie Food Pantry and the pantry’s holiday food bag distributions during the Thanksgiving & Christmas holidays. Early on we were also involved in numerous building remodeling projects in the downtown area for the housing of the homeless through Inn Vision.

Of our 137 members, approximately 62 are members of the St. Julie parish. Among our council members are the San Jose Diocese Bishop, Fr. Angelo David, Fr. Jon, Fr. Saju and Fr. Peter. The ministry leaders are essentially the officers of the council who are subject to change annually. Our yearly term is from July 1st to June 30th. Currently the Grand Knight is Tom Connolly. We are self funded via our dues and fundraising activities.

We have three meetings monthly, usually the 1st, 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month. The 1st meeting is an officers meeting (Room A), the 2nd meeting is the council business meeting (Room A) and the last meeting is our council social (Room B & C).

Layette Program

St. Julie's Layette program collects donations of baby clothes and cash to support the Layette Program of the Diocese of San Jose. The Layette Program partners with over 30 parishes and Catholic organizations along with the Santa Clara Public Health Nurses to distribute nearly 500 layettes every year to families in need. St. Julie's Layette Drive occurs every year during October and November, but donations are welcome at any time of the year. The program requests only NEW clothes in NEWBORN SIZES (sizes 0 to 6 months).  Handmade or store-bought items are acceptable, but the items should be new, not used.  This is a great opportunity for quilters, knitters, crocheters, and sewers to share their gifts with others!

Many thanks to all who have donated for your support and assistance in this essential ministry which does so much to support the cause of life by providing practical aid to needy mothers and their infants.
